Made it to Sydney after an uncomfortable 6 hour flight through the night in a middle seat, meaning pretty much no sleep again, but I refuse to pay to pick my seat, pays for my SIM card instead so I’ve got data out and about.
I had no plans at all for my time here, I’d booked a hostel for the first few nights but apart from that nothing, just seemed like a good idea.
Because I couldn’t get into the hostel room until 2pm and I landed at 8am, I dropped my bag off at at the hostel in a rental locker and went out to explore, the closest obvious place was the Sydney Opera House so that was my first stop.

Obviously this photo isn’t from my morning walk but it’s the best I’ve got so thought you deserved it. The Opera House looks so different to how you’d expect from photos you see online, including this one I’m sure, but it’s definitely something you have to do in a lifetime.
After that I headed back towards the hostel slowly via Dawes Point to have a look at Harbour Bridge, because I refuse to pay the 400 AUD to climb along it, which for some reason people do.

I was the first to check in to the 4 bed mixed dorm and had no idea what I was doing, no one prepares you for hostel etiquette, I just picked a bunk and threw myself in it to relax for a bit as I was shattered.
Everyone then got to the room and I had to figure out how to have conversations with humans again after being solo for the majority of my Bali travelling, but it made for a nice change, everyone was really nice and gave me a couple of tips for hostel life, like hanging a sheet over the bunk for privacy and always picking the bottom bunk furthest from the door, seems common sense now.
I’d also gone into the Hostelworld app which has a feature to allow you to chat with travellers in/around the hostel you’re in, and asked if anyone wanted to grab food or drinks and ended up meeting another solo traveller who was just starting a long trip around Australia, which sounded amazing.
I finished the first day feeling completely out of my comfort zone but still having a great time, excited for the next few days!
