Travelling so far

You all know how the travels have been going so far, if not there’s plenty for you to catch up with before this…

However, I thought I’d jot down some more general thoughts of how everything has been so far, plus I’ve been ill for a while and have no other updates for you. For context, what started all this was initially my decision to leave my job, in a nutshell I wasn’t happy with what I was doing in life and decided to stop putting off addressing it, choosing the east path and go for it.

At this point I still hadn’t decided to travel so I did the ‘normal’ thing and jumped back into the job search, but after a few interviews my heart wasn’t in it and I’m sure it showed. I’ve always had this idea of travelling in my head but never knew what form it could take or that it would even be possible at all.

Shortly after I ditched the job hunt and did the one thing that would make it possible, at least financially, sell my house. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, I had a six month notice to work, on the fortunate side it gave me plenty of time to get everything ready to leave.

Again, if you’ve read some of the blogs so far, in particular the first one, you’ll know things haven’t exactly gone to plan. However, that’s one of the best parts, a few people who’ve done trips like it already had given me advice to go with the flow, but it’s incredibly hard to imagine how until you do it, especially if you’re someone who’s typically very planned like me.

Doing that also gives you plenty of time to work out what you do and you don’t like, for example I struggle to stay in a tip of a hostel and just party my way through, I’m just not interested in it anymore, even though it seems to be the backpacker norm. I’ve found a sweet spot in between but you have to try it first to know, I’d never have even imagined I’d stay in a hostel before I quit my job.

Also, the world has a funny way of working out, again, it’s so hard to imagine being fine with not knowing where you’ll be staying that night, or how you’re going to earn money past a certain date when you’re in the 9-5 lifestyle, but my first hand experience is that it works out, imagine investing the 8 hours a day behind a keyboard into working out how to live your life.

I say all this and am very aware that I’m in a very fortune position but much of it applies to any part of life, you don’t have to cross the world for it.
